AUTO TRADER DRIVING SCHOOL

In this episode, we will explain you the best driving position; it will ensure comfort, control and safety during your daily driving as well as for the times you will be driving on any race track.

Sitting position
You need to ensure about 100 degrees angle with your elbows and your knees. This will guarantee enough lever to use the pedals with the right energy, without having to stretch your legs and without moving your back away from your backrest to turn your steering wheel. Also, in case of front impact, straight arms and legs would cause serious injuries to your hips and shoulders. See picture (1).

As far as your backrest is concerned, you need to keep it nice and straight. If your keep it more horizontal, your spine will not be able to transfer the weight of your head down in the seat but it will be bent and this might cause you back pain on long drives or even serious damages to the spine itself when you get older. See picture (2)

How you make sure you adjusted your seat well? Here the sequence:
[A] Adjust your distance from the pedals first. You need to be able to press the pedals fully and still have a small angle in your knees.

[B] Adjust your distance from the steering wheel. Your need to able to rest your wrist on top of your steering wheel without stretching or moving your back away from the back rest.

If you have straight arms, you will not be able to use all your muscles, like your arms, forearms and pectorals. In fact you are using only your shoulders muscles.

If you have bent legs and arms, you will be able to absorb a greater amount of energy before you get injured. Most of the steering wheels are not vertical, hence you need to make some extra room so that you can turn your steering wheel for more than 90 degrees without any stretch.

Hands position
If you have successfully reached your sitting position, you will be able to put your hands in the so called 9 and 3 position, if you think of a watch. You can notice that, if you rest your hands in this position, your elbows will have an approximate angle of 100/110 degrees. There are no other position that we recommend. Every rally, touring car, Formula 1 driver use this technique and it ensures the best control of your vehicle. You can use the strength of both arms equally, at the same time. I recommend not to squeeze the steering wheel itself too much, but keep it with soft hands so that you will be able to feel what is happening with your front wheels. If you have to turn right, you will be pulling with your right hand and pushing with your left, this way you are in control of your action.

In the picture.... you can see one of the most dangerous position: beyond not giving any kind of control, it can be deadly, if the air bag pops out: you need to know that the airbag comes out at 300 km/h and if your wrist is on the way it will be broken and it will hit your face, causing horrible damages, if not death.
