There is an increasing number of automakers
producing more eco-friendly concept
cars as the world is more aware of the
dangers of pollution to the environment.
The high price of gas these days may also
contribute to consumers looking for other alternatives
although it would probably take a few decades
before you see the streets flooded with vehicles
that run on solar, electric or hydrogen energy.
In the UAE, however, motorists may not be too
eager to do the switch yet since gasoline prices are
still considerably cheap. With almost 30% increase
in the number of vehicles on the roads here each
year, pollution is on the rise. Until the Metro and
public transport systems are in full operation servicing
most locations, everyone is dependent on cars
While we patiently await the Metro, we must do
our part to help. The Dubai Road Transport
Authority (RTA) is certainly doing its part by using
buses that is equipped with a technology that
“cleans” exhaust gases (Story on pg 44).
Consumers can opt for cars with efficient fuel consumption
and walk if the distance is short. Some of
my friends have also bought bicycles.
During the weekends, I usually chill at home or
at a neighbour's. That way I won't need to drive the
car out and pollute the air further. Five days a week
of driving is certainly enough for me.
